4/18/2010 2:12:41 PM When I first started working here, there was 75-100 illegal immigrants.I know they were illegal because some of them told me, and everyone else there knew it too.Even some of the Jewel union guys knew it but they looked at them as non union not an illegal immigrant.There were so many that alot of the supervisors had to speak spanish.They even had someone who spoke spanish to make announcements over the intercom in one department.That was four years ago, since then the company was sold twice (WSS sold to Roadlink sold to PLS)and for the last two years we've been with PLS.When PLS first bought the site they told us we can go with our current employer (Roadlink)but have to travel to another state for work or stay at the current job site and apply with PLS. Management promised the illegals they would have no problems with their applications and talked them into staying by telling them nobody else would hire them.Last year they began telling some of them they had to get things straightened out with the ss office or they would be fired.Some of them got fired but there were so many of them that I'm sure they didnt get rid of all of them.Also, the management at Melrose Park,IL likes to give their friends and favorites cushy jobs and higher pay so im sure if there were any they were fond of they had to have kept them. Finally, some hispanics that I haven't seen in months(some who I assumed were fired for being illegal)are starting to slowly come back to work again. Some of them claim they were injured for the past few months. But I suspect they probably just got another fake ss number to get hired back. The company's hiring these guys to save money by paying them slave wages, and in the process theres US citizens getting screwed because we speak up about our low pay and high work load but the illegals are too scared to speak up about anything.Many of the illegals stayed for years so of course their pay went up every year with a raise,so if they are hiring them back they're doing it because they'll have to start as a new hire with minimum pay.I would just like someone to look into this because I'm getting underpaid like I'm illegal and I would like for the facility manager and PLS to get what they deserve for the way they treat their employees.
